No matter what you do, you should always try to begin a challenging situation well prepared. In our line of excavation work, that means bringing the right equipment to the job.
There’s an old saying, “when your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. When you hire Island Efficient Excavating, you can trust that we will bring the most appropriate tool for the job.
The correct equipment will get your job done faster, with less cleanup, and with as little disruption to the environment as possible.
- Are we digging irrigation trenches in a backyard that has restricted access? Load up the quiet rubber-track mini excavator.
- Do we need to quickly move and spread piles of gravel or soil? Best to use a skid-steer loader.
- How about excavating a large foundation in a new subdivision? Time to upgrade to a steel-track excavator with a large bucket.
In other words, we have the equipment and the experience to bring the right gear to best suit the needs of your project.

Rubber-track Mini Excavator
Mini excavators are the unsung heroes of the excavation contracting world. Thanks to a relatively small footprint – and the rubber tracks – this machine can get into tight spots without tearing up the existing landscape.
We also have different bucket styles for different applications. Toothed buckets are great for digging in tough terrain, while a flat-edge bucket may be used for clean-up work, grading, or moving material.
But there's more to mini excavators than just digging. The handy quick-change system allows us to swap the bucket out for a variety of handy attachments to help with breaking rocks, drilling post holes, and compacting earth.
Mini excavators are also built to keep noise levels down to a dull roar, making them much less disruptive in residential neighbourhoods.
- Rubber treads allow for little ground disturbance
- Narrow width for easy backyard access
- This small excavator packs a big punch!

Steel-track Mid-size Excavator
With an increased digging force and bucket size capacity, mid-size excavators can really increase the efficiency of larger projects.
Mid-size excavators are typically in the 6-10 ton class, making them powerful but not unwieldy in residential and in-town situations. With the larger size, these excavators also provide a longer reach, which can be handy for deeper foundation excavation.
One consideration with steel-tracked excavators is how the tracks will affect the ground. Unlike the rubber-track models that exert less ground pressure, care needs to be taken when moving a steel-track machine over finished landscapes. For that reason we typically use steel-track machines on unfinished ground, such as in a new home construction.
And just like the mini-excavators, this mid-size model can also accept a range of attachments for drilling, cutting, breaking, moving, and clamping.
- Increased break-out force digs through tough Vancouver Island terrain
- Steel tracks perform well on rocky, uneven ground
- Larger bucket size and increased reach help to complete large jobs quickly

Skid-Steer Loader
Ah, the humble skid-steer loader. A relatively simply and compact piece of equipment that hasn’t changed much over the years, but a real workhorse nonetheless.
Did you know? Though “skid-steer loader” is the correct name for this machine, you may know it as a “Bobcat”. That’s not technically correct – Bobcat is a brand name of an equipment manufacturer that’s become synonymous with skid-steer loaders (like Kleenex and facial tissue).
Whatever you call it, these machines excel at moving and spreading materials such as soil, mulch, and gravel.
In addition to moving materials, we’ll often use skid-steer loaders when grading land and reshaping a property.
Available as both wheeled and rubber-tracked variants, each type has its different strengths. Depending on your specific job, we’ll bring the most appropriate machine to the site.
Skid-steer loaders can also accept a range of different attachments to make them even more useful. Swap out the bucket for forks to move pallets of blocks or pavers; use a post-hole attachment to blast through fence holes; or clean up the jobsite using a hydraulic sweeper.
- Quickly moves materials around a job site
- Small design makes it easy to maneuver safely
- Fits a wide range of handy attachments, such as pallet forks and a hydraulic sweeper

Trucking & Hauling
When you’re working with an excavator contractor, you’re also working with raw materials.
Whether clearing brush and trees from a new lot, digging a foundation, or preparing a base for a concrete slab, we typically need to bring material in, haul material out – or both.
Fortunately, we can assist with all of your material hauling needs to help keep your project moving forwards. When you hire Island Efficient Excavating to work on your site, we always include material removal as part of the estimate. You won’t have to worry about arranging for a trucking company, or renting a disposal bin.
Soil, mulch, decorative gravels, base material, and more can be brought right to your site and dumped just where we need it. And if we’ve excavated material from your property that won’t be repurposed on site, we’ll haul it away and make sure it ends up in the right place.
- All of our services include material removal from your site
- Have us bring in bulk materials like gravel, sand, and soil
- Haul out and dispose of brush, clay, rocky soil, and other unwanted materials
